紅外線檢測儀是利用紅外探測器和光學成像物鏡接受被測目標的紅外輻射能量分布圖形反映到紅外探測器的光敏元件上，從而獲得紅外熱像圖，這種熱像圖與物體表面的熱分布場相對應。通俗地講紅外熱像儀就是將物體發出的不可見紅外能量轉變為可見的熱圖像。熱圖像的上面的不同顏色代表被測物體的不同溫度。用亮表示溫度高，暗表示溫度低。或用暖色和冷色表示溫度高低。紅外位于電磁光譜中的一段，紅外線是肉眼不能看見的。絕對零度以上的所有物體均會以紅外線的形式輻射熱能到環境中。
作用:
紅外線檢測儀等先進的設備檢測手段發揮了其重要的作用。首先，成功的故障診斷，尤其是能適度提前報告出故障的診斷，將產生明顯的效益。這種效益在特殊的情況下是極為可觀的；其次，故障診斷技術對設備維修可以產生巨大的輔助作用。它不但可以大大節省人力資源，還改變了維修方式——以先進的狀態維修方式逐步取代計劃維修方式，甚至對庫存備件的管理方式都將產生積極的影響
